Immigrant Makes Film about Being Italian-Canadian in Montreal

A first-generation Italian-Canadian, Agata De Santis, has always been fascinated with the changing culture of the Italian-Canadian experience. She grew up in Montreal and was surrounded by a culture that was close-knit and anchored by food. She wanted to avoid clichés with her film, but it always came back to food. She said food is a secure transmission of culture, but it is more than that. It is about keeping the family unit together. Her film, Terra Mia, is translated as My Land. In her film, DeSantis talks about being a teenager and rebelling against her mom’s traditional birthday sponge cake. “We wanted what our non-Italian friends were getting,” De Santis said. The push back didn’t last long. Now the classic sponge cake is the ultimate symbol of every celebration. She says it isn’t about just being delicious, but being a ballad to the upbringing, to memories, and her family’s traditions. She has been creating and writing films about her Italian community for many years. In 2012, she began a blog where she shares with others her Italian-Canadian experience to a younger audience. The film echoes the sentiment that some of the cultural institutions are a little slow to adapt to modern culture. The organizations that are the pillars of the Montreal Italian community might not continue if they aren’t flexible with the younger generation. DeSantis said, “Kids are not going to go to spaghetti dinners, and if you do drag them there, they’re going to be bored out of their minds.” There is an “identity crisis” among the group, especially with those that are several generations out from the immigrant experience. Her film is being screened as a part of Italian Week. Contact Canadian Visa Professionals for help with the immigration process.
