Canadian Cities Have 3 of the World’s Top 10 Best Libraries

Public libraries in the western world are struggling to remain open. Britain has seen hundreds of libraries close since 2010, several have reduced their hours, and many have replaced paid librarians with volunteers. In North America, circulation and visitors have dropped, and staff per visitor has decreased since 2012. In Belgium, Public Libraries 2020, an advocacy group is trying to ‘challenge outdated perceptions’ of libraries. With so much reading material online, why pay for physical book repositories. Heinrich Heine University Dusseldorf researchers recently ranked Canada as home to the best public library systems among the 30 major cities they studied. All three Canadian cities they looked at came in the top ten, which included Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. The Toronto library has free readings and events in its 575-seat theater. A recent appearance by Roxane Gay sold out in less than two minutes. The researchers rated the libraries on the availability of snacks as well. The Toronto library has a full café, while Montreal’s Grande Bibliotheque serves wine and a risotto dinner.
